Wait, What? I'm Confused -- as a parent, this phrase is near and dear to my heart because I hear it uttered out of at least 1 child's mouth per day. I have decided it is the new "huh," where you heard the person, but your brain is still deciphering their words, so you just sub consciously say "huh." Then you realize you heard it and have finally understood and can answer -- so conversations go like this:
Me: Did you work on your laundry?
Them: Wait, what? I'm confused
Me: Did you...
Them (interrupting me): Oh no, I still need to work on my laundry,
Me: (growling)
OR
Me: Why are you missing an assignment?
Them: Wait, what? I'm confused
Me: There is a mis.....
Them: (interrupting me) I got the assignment in class last Thursday, but didn't have enough time because instead I was talking to [friend] and ran out of time. And this weekend, I didn't have time to do it either because I was....
Me: (interrupting them) Wait, what? I'm confused - when were you working so hard this weekend on stuff that you didn't have time for homework???
Them: Well, you had me do the lawn and my chore, so I just ran out of time.
Me: Wait, what? I'm confused. What were you doing the rest of the weekend?
Them: Wait, what? I'm confused.
Then I walk away and over analyze and go through an emotional roller coaster asking myself questions:
How are so many people so confused by life?
What life skills are my children lacking?
Am I a bad parent?
How could I let them get this confused?
Did I not speak clearly?
Do they need therapy?
Maybe they have too much game time?
Maybe I am too strict?
Should I have let them watch that movie 2 years ago that had 1 curse word in it and a boob?
Maybe it is because I let them share a room?
Was it that I forced them to eat their vegetables?
Conclusion: My kids just don't like me and only listen when I yell. That's it. They want to hear me yell. Wait, what? I'm confused!!
I certainly cannot be the only parent that does this. Am I right?
